Garry Turkington

Garry is a 20-year technology industry veteran, with extensive experience in building and leading software development teams and with deep personal expertise in distributed systems and large-scale data processing. He recently started as CTO of a scale up gamification. In his previous role as the CTO at Improve Digital he created and grew the internal engineering organisation and has led multiple initiatives to build systems to support the company’s global ad-serving footprint and process the vary large volumes of data it generates. Before joining Improve Digital, he spent time at Amazon.co.uk, where he led several software development teams building systems that process the Amazon catalogue data for every item worldwide. Prior to this, he spent a decade in various government positions in both the UK and the USA. He has BSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science from Queens University Belfast in Northern Ireland, and a MEng in Systems Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in the USA. He is the author of Hadoop Beginners Guide (Packt 2013) and co-author of Learning Hadoop 2 (Packt, 2015). Next to supporting the companies in the portfolio of CapitalT on everything related to Data & Engineering he is also performing the tech DD’s for companies CapitalT invests in and part of the development team of VCVolt.
